Taipei Confucius Temple

About

A quiet oasis in the bustling Datong District, the Taipei Confucius Temple is a masterpiece of classical Chinese architecture. Built in the Fujian style, with sweeping, curved roofs and no statues or images of Confucius himself (a deliberate choice reflecting his teachings), the temple feels serene and scholarly. The courtyards are peaceful, with ancient trees and stone pathways. If you time your visit right, you might catch one of the traditional eight-row ceremonial dances performed during the annual Confucius Birthday ceremony in September. The temple is also right next to the much more flamboyant Dalongdong Bao’an Temple, making for a fascinating contrast. It’s a wonderful place to escape the noise of the city and reflect on one of history’s most influential thinkers.
