Lake • Nantou
Lalu Island in the middle of Sun Moon Lake is a sacred place for the Thao indigenous tribe, and it’s surrounded by legend and beauty. The island is small—just a rocky outcrop with a single tree—but it’s considered the spiritual heart of the lake. You can’t actually walk on the island anymore (it’s protected), but you can view it from a boat tour or from the shore. The best time to see it is at dawn, when the mist rises off the water and the island looks almost ethereal. The Thao people believe it’s where their ancestors first emerged, and there’s a palpable sense of reverence. It’s a quick stop, but one that adds depth to any Sun Moon Lake visit. Don’t miss it.
