The Chiang Kai-shek Shilin Residence in Taipei is a fascinating peek into the life of Taiwan’s former leader. This modest house—modest for a dictator, anyway—is set in a lush garden that feels like a secret forest in the middle of Shilin. The residence itself is a two-story building filled with period furniture, photos, and personal artifacts, giving you a sense of the man behind the myth. The gardens are the real highlight, with winding paths, koi ponds, and a greenhouse that looks straight out of a fairytale. It’s a popular spot for wedding photos, and you’ll often see brides and grooms posing among the flowers. The admission is cheap, and it’s a nice break from the chaos of Shilin Night Market nearby.
